Call to Action “Solving Nano and Microplastic Pollution in Australia”
As the fifth session of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee (INC-5) to develop an international legally binding instrument on plastic pollution came to an end, on December 1st, the chair made publicly available a 3rd version of the non-paper document stating in article 7 that :
“Each Party shall take measures to prevent, reduce, and, where possible, eliminate:
(a) releases and leakages of plastics, including microplastics, into the environment and from all sources”.
Although the negotiations could not be concluded at this INC-5 meeting, Australia, as part of the High Ambition Coalition, has an opportunity to lead by example in addressing this critical issue, and we, the Nano and Microplastic Research Consortium, strongly advocate for immediate action.
